Sprinkler Installation & Servicing
At Fire Prevention we have been involved in a wide range of domestic and residential sprinkler installations throughout Scotland. These have involved a broad range of building types from new build apartment blocks to individual homes and retrofit five-storey townhouses to double-upper HMO student accommodation.
Domestic & Residential Systems
Sprinkler systems used in domestic and residential premises are simple, easy to maintain and utilise CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) pipework suitable for the purpose. Water supplies for each development are analysed and if it is not possible to connect directly to the cold water mains (water authority approval required) a pump and tank can be installed where mains water supply is insufficient to provide the pressure and flow rate to operate the system.
Sprinkler installations for residential and domestic premises are required to meet the standards set out in BS9251:2005. Domestic systems are designed to service each sprinkler head, which is independent from the domestic plumbing system. More information is available from the BAFSA website.
Sprinkler heads commonly used are a concealed pendant type that is provided with a flat cover plate. The specification of the heads installed may depend on the development requirements and local authority specification and approval.
Benefits for Designers & Builders
Inclusion of a domestic or residential sprinkler system will provide options when used in conjunction with a fire safety engineered design in order to remove cumbersome additional escape stairs and protected lobbies while maintaining the integral safety of the occupant and building user. We can, through engineering and design, ensure that you maximise your space available for either rent or sale, increasing your revenue with dramatic results.
Open plan or similar living is a concept previously restricted with the freedom of design by architects being limited. With the correctly designed, installed and maintained unobtrusive domestic sprinkler system, the options are limited only by the imagination.
Sprinklers have also been used as a compensating feature in developments where the Building Regulations cannot be complied to with respect of means of escape or access for the fire brigade. Some projects have even reported that providing sprinklers has resulted in a cost saving where the building authority has permitted trade-offs in respect of means of escape facilities.
